PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

The student will:

GOAL I: Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts: Uderstanding the Role of the Arts in People's Lives

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will discover how living things influence musical compositions.

The student will explore how literary works influence musical compositions.



The student will compare and contrast stories, music, customs of cultures represented within the school community.

The student will discover how different countries/cultures use musical dance for special days or celebrating events.

Sing songs that show an appreciation for nature - animals, love of the land, (This Land Is Your Land), love songs, etc.

Listen to the Clock Striking Midnight from Prokofiev's Ballet "Cinderella."



Invite family or community members to share their heritage through story, song, dance, etc.



Share how countries/cultures celebrate a particular holiday (e.g., Christmas carols in our country and European countries).

GOAL II: Personal Expression and Production/Performance: Communicating Through the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will increase rhythmic melodic ability using a variety of instruments while creating/interpreting musical compositions.

The student will develop criteria for their original musical composition and use them to evaluate work in progress and the final product.



The student will sing songs using vocal and rhythmic accuracy and adding body movement (dance) if desired.

Experiment with instruments to accompany a given piece of music, or their composition.

Simple Compositions: Introduce the theme, develop the theme, theme returns. After hearing musical examples, compose a composition as a class.

GOAL III: Arts Criticism: Responding to the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will describe how composers/performers use instruments/voices, scenery, costumes, choreography to create musical works.

The student will develop and apply music terminology when discussing or identifying a specific element of music through song or instrumental example.













The student will aurally and visually identify and discuss characteristics and motives in a musical work or song.

Observe various performances - ballet, opera, musical, symphony, etc., and discuss how the performer's choice influences the musical expression.



Continue to build a music vocabulary to describe the elements of music:

Pitch

Duration

Form

Timbre

Dynamics

Texture



Listen for a particular melodic pattern that repeats in a song. Aurally identify by raising hands while eyes are closed.

GOAL IV: Nature and Meaning of the Arts: Valuing the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will compare personal preferences with others.

The student will recognize and practice audience behavior appropriate for the musical performances being represented.

Make a graph together, as a class, as to who likes the musical selections heard (after playing the Token Games).

Describe why it is important to be a courteous listener at performances. List reasons.
