GOAL I: Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts: Understanding the Role of the Arts in People's Lives

music) The student will recognize that composers from different times have composed music for money purposes.
The student will investigate the musical traditions and conventions of the United States and compare and contrast it with that of other people, cultures, and geographic locations. |
Listen to and talk about Baroque/early dance music and rhythms "vs" modern dance music. Discuss program music - role of choral music - purpose - changes throughout history - opera.
Introduce composers (revisit introduced composers) i.e., Bach - church music, Mozart - opera, Haydn - court music.
Patriotic music, war songs, rallying songs |

GOAL II: Personal Expression and Production/Performance: Communicating Through the Arts

knowledge of a variety of materials, tools, techniques, and
processes. The student will use appropriate terminology criteria to evaluate his/her own work.
The student will identify how technical elements affect works of music/art.
The student will identify the similarities and differences between planned and improvisational art forms. |
Communicate an idea using art examples and by composing a piece of music using rhythm instruments, vocal sounds, "musical notation."
Perform a song, (concert, play.) - Record the performance then view/listen to it and discuss/critique the performance.
Talk about accompaniment - piano, guitar to accompaniment tapes - use of microphones
Listen to recordings of notated piece and improvised music and discuss the differences.
Sing/play a composed piece and improvise. |

GOAL III: Arts Criticism: Responding to the Arts

Listen to pieces of music from different composers and times and discuss its use, expression of idea, attitude, value or belief. Describe/discuss similarities, differences - speculate about composers' choice.
Determine central ideas in compositions. |

GOAL IV: Nature and Meaning of the Arts: Valuing the Arts

The student will recognize and demonstrate audience behavior appropriate for the context and style of the arts form.

The student will identify and describe the roles of artists and the collaborative nature of many art forms. |
Listen to a piece of music and have individual students talk about their opinions of the music.
Talk about why individuals or groups prefer certain types of music over other types. (i.e., parent/family influence, geographic location, church music)
Discuss/Compare appropriate behavior for a rock concert, symphony, and visit to a museum
Attend a concert and display the appropriate behavior.
Discuss how the arts affect us. Lullabies have a calming affect.
After viewing a contemporary musical cartoon, identify all of the arts used and tell how important each was to the success of the cartoon. |
