GOAL I: Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts: Understanding the Role of the Arts in People's Lives

The student will observe environmental, social and personal events and record information using one or more music forms.

The student will give evidence that musical expression is a thought process.



The student will investigate processes used by various cultures, past, and present to create works of art.



The student will use a variety of sources to gain an understanding of a musician and/or a musical form.

Identify different styles of music from different time periods.

Identify instrumentation used by a composers.





What was happening in the world when a particular composition was written.



Listen to several examples of waltz or march.

GOAL II: Personal Expression and Production/Performance: Communicating Through the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will connect ideas, materials, processes, and techniques while creating music.



The student will take an idea through a planning, reflection and revision process.



The student will solve a problem in different ways and evaluate choices.



Create a piece of music/sound utilizing previous knowledge attained. (instruments pitch, dynamics, elements, texture, timbre etc.).

Plan and revise, keep a journal on the progress, and evaluate the end result.



Write a two or four bar rhythm containing quarter notes and eighth notes.

GOAL III: Arts Criticism: Responding to the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will examine a piece of music and speculate how different choices would change the meaning of the music.

 

The student will develop and expand musical vocabulary.



The student will critique a piece of music and find its meaning.



Listen to and critique a piece of music and speculate why the composer chose: instruments, texture, tempo, dynamics, rhythm, intervals, etc.



Introduce musical terms such as piano, forte, and meter.



Contrast the "Arabian Dance" and the "Russian Dance" from the "Nutcracker."

GOAL IV: Nature and Meaning of the Arts: Valuing the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will use primary sources, including interviews, to gain an understanding of how and why music is valued by an individual or group.

The student will discuss what determines value.

The student will recognize and demonstrate audience/viewer behavior appropriate for the context and style of the arts.

Express why they like or dislike a piece of music using appropriate language.

Compare a piece of rock music with a waltz or minuet.



Discuss proper concert etiquette.
