PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

The student will:

GENERAL MUSIC - GRADE 6

GOAL I: Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts: Understanding the Role of the Arts in People's Lives

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will identify the impact that scientific and social events have had on ideas expressed through music.







The student will develop a chronology for an existing music form and/or process and speculate about its future development.

Scientific acoustics, sound waves, sound production; integrate with instruments (reeds-brass, strings, percussion - How are sounds produced?)

Demonstrate sound production with various experiments:

1. reeds made with straws

2. sea sound noise with salt on a drumhead



Social slave calls - blues - boogie woogie - folk music - protest songs.



Discuss the evolution of music in the home. (i.e., Chamber music was used in the classical era.) Today, CD's and tapes have changed music from something to be performed to something to be listened to.

 

GENERAL MUSIC - GRADE 6

GOAL II: Personal Expression and Production/Performance: Communicating Through the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will research current technological trends and speculate how they will interfere, interface, and integrate with music.





The student will provide written testimony about the importance of composers'/musicians' work to society.





The student will develop precision in the use of techniques and processes when creating and performing music.

Create a portfolio that will implement Goal I, II, III, and IV.

Compare and contrast two different styles of music from two different time periods.





Technological Trends - vinyl vs CD, computer software, computer keyboards, synthesizers.





Creative expression

1. Write lyrics to a song

2. Create simple melodies using musical notation

3. Discuss how specific musical elements affect

your feelings. Dynamics, texture, tone color,

balance, articulation, major/minor, etc.

GOAL III: Arts Criticism: Responding to the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will use places where actual musical experiences are shared as resources/inspiration and collaborative artistic expression.





The student will examine musical forms and processes as a basis for developing criteria for their own work.





The student will use musical vocabulary when discussing and analyzing musical forms.

Portfolio Continuation



Attend a concert, studio class, recital, etc. Keep a journal, critique performances using a musical vocabulary.



Create a crossword puzzle to develop vocabulary/conceptual skills.





Write letters to musicians in all forms (theatre, dance, etc.) Ask what influenced their creative expression.

GOAL IV: Nature and Meaning of the Arts: Valuing the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will act as a consumer of the arts/music and defend his/her procedures and the criteria used to evaluate their selections.







The student will interview a musician to gather information about why he/she creates and for whom.



The student will identify elements of other historical/traditional/current philosophies that agree with their own ideas. Document and discuss.

Portfolio Continuation



Give each student a selection of music; (Broadway, rap, classical, country, etc.) and have them defend why they like it or do not like it.
