Scientific acoustics, sound waves, sound production; integrate with instruments (reeds-brass, strings, percussion - How are sounds produced?) Demonstrate sound production with various experiments: 1. reeds made with straws 2. sea sound noise with salt on a drumhead
Social slave calls - blues - boogie woogie - folk music - protest songs.
Discuss the evolution of music in the home. (i.e., Chamber music was used in the classical era.) Today, CD's and tapes have changed music from something to be performed to something to be listened to. |

GOAL II: Personal Expression and Production/Performance: Communicating Through the Arts

Create a portfolio that will implement
Goal I, II, III, and IV. Compare and contrast two different styles of music from two different time periods.
Technological Trends - vinyl vs CD, computer software, computer keyboards, synthesizers.
Creative expression 1. Write lyrics to a song 2. Create simple melodies using musical notation 3. Discuss how specific musical elements affect your feelings. Dynamics, texture, tone color, balance, articulation, major/minor, etc. |

Portfolio Continuation
Attend a concert, studio class, recital, etc. Keep a journal, critique performances using a musical vocabulary.
Create a crossword puzzle to develop vocabulary/conceptual skills.
Write letters to musicians in all forms (theatre, dance, etc.) Ask what influenced their creative expression. |

GOAL IV: Nature and Meaning of the Arts: Valuing the Arts

The student will interview a musician to gather information about why he/she creates and for whom.
The student will identify elements of other historical/traditional/current philosophies that agree with their own ideas. Document and discuss. |
Portfolio Continuation
Give each student a selection of music; (Broadway, rap, classical, country, etc.) and have them defend why they like it or do not like it.
