The student will:

GOAL I: Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts: Understanding the Role of the Arts in People's Lives

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will discover pulse in his/her own body, machines, or objects in the environment.



The student will examine how music adds to other art forms.

The student will associate music with particular places or events.

Listen to an audio cassette tape of sounds heard in nature. Identify sounds with a pulse. Listen to machine sounds found in homes or vehicles.

Watch a cartoon without music. Watch cartoon again with music added. Discuss the difference.

Listen to a march. Discuss where the march might be heard (e.g., parade, a football game, etc.).

Listen to a lullaby. Discuss where it might be heard (e.g., child's bedroom).

GOAL II: Personal Expression and Production/Performance: Communicating Through the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will sing and listen to songs expressing various moods and feelings.



The student will experiment and practice using melodic instruments (including the voice) and rhythm instruments to discover their possibilities and limitations.

Compare and contrast songs of joy (e.g., Christmas, Hanukkah, patriotic, and holiday songs) to songs expressing sadness.

Discover the many ways one might create sounds on an autoharp (e.g., mallet, an eraser, a paper clip etc.). Discover the many ways the voice can make sounds.

GOAL III: Arts Criticism: Responding to the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will develop and apply music terminology through aural identification.









The student will discover ways a composer develops ideas (musical thought).

Introduce these musical elements:

Duration long/short sounds

Pitch high/low sounds

Form same/different

Timbre voice/melodic/rhythm instruments

Listen to a musical example of theme and variations. Aurally identify by raising hand when theme changes. Discuss change.

GOAL IV: Nature and Meaning of the Arts: Valuing the Arts

Student Objective

Content/Suggested Activities

The student will examine personal preferences of listening selections.

















The student will distinguish between creating/playing/performing space and audience space.

The "Token Game" is a game that allows the student to express him/herself. After hearing five listening selections, put a symbol by the appropriate record jacket or CD case.

This symbol represents the one he/she personally likes the best

Participate both as a performer and a listener in the audience. Discuss how to behave as a listener and why.
