AREA OF STUDY I. NUTRITION (7/8)

Program Goal: Students will be knowledgeable about all aspects of nutrition and will be able to apply this information to daily living.

Program Objective: 1. The student will know how to solve problems, set goals and make decisions in health-related situations.

Instructional Objectives:

The student will:

1.1 demonstrate knowledge of food pyramid and its recommended daily allowances;

1.2 demonstrate knowledge of the 6 nutrients, (fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and water) and their role in maintaining a good diet;

PPO 1.3 Using appropriate sources, the student will list the six nutrients and identify five foods which provide each of the six nutrients. (Pass/Fail)

ALCOHOL, TOBACCO & OTHER DRUGS (7/8)

Program Goal: Students will develop and understanding of the impact of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on total wellness and will know ways to prevent abuse of these substances.

Program Objective: 1. The student will know how to solve problems, set goals and make decisions in health-related situations.

Instructional Objectives:

The student will:

1.1 know that alcohol and drugs can cause impairment and inappropriate behavior. When this happens they should seek a safe solution

a) know how to call for help;
b) know where to go;
c) know who to tell;
d) know how to say no to drugs and alcohol;

1.2 be able to discuss the adverse effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and use this information to make decisions.

1.1 examine the concept of adolescent risk taking and apply basic problem solving and refusal skills to sexual and other risk taking situations;

1.2 explain the difficulties with "just saying no";

1.3 discuss examples of dangerous situations and what happened to people who were unaware or thoughtless of the risk;

1.4 complete a personal health risk appraisal;

1.5 practice using different refusal skills;

2.3 understand the physical, emotional and social changes occurring during puberty;

2.4 alleviate fears by separating facts from fiction concerning the physical and emotional changes involved with puberty;

4.3 identify places to go for information and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases;

4.4 discuss why abstinence from sexual intercourse is the only option that is 100% effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy;

4.5 identify and discuss two major life changes that a pregnancy and parenthood would create for them including economic factors.

INJURY AND DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL (7/8)

Program Goal: Students will be knowledgeable of all types of injury and disease and will develop an understanding of ways to prevent and control injury and disease.

SAFETY

1.1 determine procedures for emergency situations and know the immediate actions to take to decrease the severity of the situation;

1.2 select health and safety-related articles/information for analysis from current media sources;

1.3 recognize the importance of personal choices in the occurrence and severity of a health or safety issues.

FIRST AID

1.4 identify first aid procedures appropriate to common emergencies in home, school, and community settings (e.g., rescue breathing/CPR, choking, mild burns, fractured or dislocated bones, cuts and shock);

1.5 study the impact of ultra violet radiation on the skin;

1.6 know to apply the steps in R.I.C.E. if a person experiences a sports related accident (i.e. R. rest, I. ice--apply directly, C. compression and E. elevation--keep the injury above the heart).

1.1 examine situations that can produce stress and understand that stress can have positive as well as negative effects (e.g., family problems, school, peers, abuse, and divorce);
