(CHEMCOM)

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

1. The learner will use standard laboratory equipment in a safe and appropriate manner and record measurements in appropriate units.

2. The learner will conduct a project where they will investigate their own personal use of water, the use of water by the community, and the responsibilities of local water treatment facilities.

3. Given a chemical reaction by the instructor, the learner will use the periodic table to predict reactivity of the elements involved to determine products and balance the equation.

4. The learner will research the different energy sources available to humankind to make predictions of the future use of petroleum products as compared to alternative energy sources.

5. Given the nutritional information found on a food item, the student will report on its nutritional values to humans and check through experimentation the calorie information provided on the label.

6. The learner will give an opinion, either orally or written, on the use of nuclear energy as a form of energy in today's society and in the future.

7. The learner will use basic chemistry to address the concerns relating to the impurities in our atmosphere and its effects on global warming.

8. Given a topic (e.g. smoking, over eating, drinking of alcohol, eating vegetarian ), the learner will use basic body chemistry to participate in a debate concerning the topic.

9. The learner will choose a local company to assess the positive and negative effects to the community.

A. METRIC MEASUREMENTS

1. practice metric manipulations and conversions with reasonable accuracy and precision.

2. develop familiarity with and use terms associated with metric measurements.

3. develop an awareness of metric use in their everyday lives.

4. recognize why scientist prefer metric measurement over U. S. customary units.

B. CHEMICAL LABORATORY SAFETY

1. demonstrate a knowledge of the location and use of the various pieces of laboratory safety equipment.

2. learn and habitually follow the basic lab safety rules.

3. identify and correctly use the basic lab equipment pertinent to the lab investigation.

C. WATER QUALITY

1. answer the following:

a. What do we do with water?

b. Where does it come from?

c. Where is the Earth's water located?
